Emergent phonology
نویسنده
چکیده
0. Speech and phonology As is well known the physical properties of speech are determined by a large number of factors. They vary depending on the language spoken, on the age, gender and identity of the speaker. They undergo stylistical modifications in innumerable ways owing to the interaction of physiological, cognitive, social and communicative factors. Linguistics deals with this problem by assigning the study of the speech signal to phonetics. Phonology investigates postulated sound structure, that is abstract entities and processes which are assumed to underlie speech behavior and which are by definition independent of performance and language use. In this way, the study of speech sounds is split into two: Phonology becomes digital, and phonetics analog.

Phonology without universal grammar
The question of identifying the properties of language that are specific human linguistic abilities, i.e., Universal Grammar, lies at the center of linguistic research. This paper argues for a largely Emergent Grammar in phonology, taking as the starting point that memory, categorization, attention to frequency, and the creation of symbolic systems are all nonlinguistic characteristics of the h...
متن کاملA realistic model of emergent phonology
In this report, ongoing research into the explanation of universal characteristics of human sound systems is presented. The characteristics are explained through a theory which is called emergent phonology. This theory is based on the ideas of Luc Steels (Steels 1995, 1996, 1997) that language is an emergent adaptive system in a population of language users in which coherence is maintained thro...
متن کاملEmergent feature structures: harmony systems in exemplar models of phonology
In exemplar models of phonology, phonotactic constraints are modeled as emergent from patterns of high activation between units that co-occur with statistical regularity, or as patterns of low activation or inhibition between units that cooccur less frequently or not at all. Exemplar models posit no a priori formal or representational properties to the phonological units or sound patterns that ...
متن کاملTones are not
This paper renewed the representation problem of tone in phonology theory. Accumulating evidence from phonetic researches shows that tones are not abstract autosegmentals. In contrast, stable temporal structures are found regarding tonal alignments to segmental productions. That is, tone gesture is coupled with consonant and vowel gestures in syllable production. This paper described new eviden...
متن کاملEmergent Faithfulness to Proper Nouns in Novel English Blends
Emergent effects (McCarthy & Prince 1994) are the result of phonological constraints or rankings that only reveal themselves in a specific context. That is, they have no discernable effect in the regular phonology of a language but become apparent when speakers perform particular tasks. Crucially, they reveal knowledge that was not learned directly from ambient language data. Emergent effects h...
